Proofreading 

​ensuring writing is

​When proofreading we check for
  • typos
  • spelling
  • ​macrons
  • punctuation
  • grammar
  • omissions
  • ambiguities
  • spacing between words
  • heading consistency
  • page numbers, headers and footers 
  • font size and style.
Post-graduate students: it is generally acceptable for a thesis ​or dissertation to be proofread. The proofreader does not contribute in any way to the intellectual content of the work.  

Copy-
editing

​ensuring the writing is clear, coherent, correct and consistent.
When copy-editing we check for ​all proofreading aspects, and also for
  • appropriate language, tailored to suit the reader
  • flow and relevance
  • consistency and completeness of text, title pages, contents, list of illustrations
  • format of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography, appendixes, glossary, index
  • labelling and placement of artwork
  • layout and style.

Structural
​editing ​

ensuring the writing is structured to effectively convey what is intended.
When completing a structural or developmental edit,  we check that
  • there is a logical and clear structure
  • all content is organised, unambiguous, clear and comprehensive
  • style, content and illustrations are appropriate
  • conclusions are based on sound evidence.
