Proofreading and editing

Proofreading:
ensuring writing is free of errors.

When proofreading we check for
  • typos
  • spelling
  • punctuation
  • grammar
  • omissions
  • ambiguities
  • spacing between words
  • heading consistency
  • page numbers, headers and footers
  • font size and style.
Post-graduate students: it is generally acceptable for a thesis
or dissertation to be proofread. The proofreader does not contribute in any way to the intellectual content of the work.

Copy-editing:

ensuring the writing is clear, coherent, consistent and correct.

When copy-editing we check for all proofreading aspects, and also for
  • appropriate language, tailored to suit the reader
  • flow and relevance
  • consistency and completeness of text, title pages, contents, list of illustrations
  • format of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography, appendixes, glossary, index
  • labelling and placement of artwork
  • layout and style.

Structural editing:  ensuring the writing is structured to effectively convey what is intended.

When completing a structural or developmental edit,  we check that
  • there is a logical and clear structure
  • all content is organised, unambiguous, clear and comprehensive
  • style, content and illustrations are appropriate
  • conclusions are based on sound evidence.
